The salamander is an amphibian that belongs to the order of the Urodela.  For years these little have been used by those in witchcraft as fire elementals, as salamanders are thought to have crawled up from the center Earth, where fire naturally exists.  Using this principal and the fact that the salamander does exhibit characteristics of the dragon, has led witches to discover that the salamander is, indeed, a fire elemental being.  It has been used as such throughout the years.
