Vines lashed out. Damien dodged, a blur of shadow and fang, while Seraphina wove counter-spells that made the air scream. The battle raged through mirrored illusions and time-fractured pockets—Damien leaping across chasms of void, Seraphina unraveling Elowen’s glamour thread by thread. In the climax, as the fae queen lunged for the killing blow, Damien and Seraphina moved as one. He feinted, drawing her wrath; Seraphina struck true, binding Elowen in chains of living light. The Shard shattered her illusions and returned to their hands, warm and humming with restored power.
Back in the Conclave hall, Elowen was exiled to the void-realms, her throne claimed by a new fae lord sworn to the pact. The Veil held. Balance endured.
But as the assembly dissolved into mist and starlight, Damien lingered in the cathedral’s undercroft with Seraphina. A crack in the crypt of his solitude.
Seraphina’s fingers brushed his, magic sparking like fireworks in the dark. “The Conclave forbids entanglements. Power imbalances.” Her smile was slow, wicked. “But we’ve broken worse rules tonight—rules older than the first eclipse.”
